the recollection

Since my early childhood I showed an aptitude for mathematics, and in order to give me the only chance for a good high university education my parents decided to leave Kazakhstan. It was October again. I could feel that familiar uneasiness returning to me. My fourth-grade classmates' stares seemed to chain me to my seat with unbearable weight. I slumped in my chair, head lowered, eyes downcast, staring at my open textbook. My nine-year-old body carried the affects of several years of discrimination, degradation, self-consciousness, and embarrassment. I was one of only a few Russian children left in my class. My teacher's voice still rings in my mind, ‘‘I wish I could help you to get the necessary knowledge to develop your skills.“ Next year the number of the lessons of Russian language and mathematics in my school were significantly decreased.

Since Kazakh culture started to prevail at schools, the lack of knowledge of some subjects would not allow me to be accepted to the good college. I grew up in a lower-middle neighborhood in Alma-Ata, one of three children. Since my early childhood I showed an aptitude for mathematics, and in order to give me the only chance for a good high university education my parents decided to leave Kazakhstan. We left our house, relatives, and friends. We moved from town to town in Russia as my father tried to get better paying, less physically taxing jobs, and I changed schools often. This upheaval might have soured some students on school and driven them into a shell. I had the opposite response: I threw myself wholeheartedly into each new school, striving to distinguish myself to new teachers and peers. In some schools this allowed me more opportunity for advanced study, in others teachers who were already too overtaxed to adequately educate the thirty ''average'' students in the class seated me in the corner with instructions to complete the lessons and entertain myself non-disruptively for the remaining time. I started reading anything that I could get my hands on, and so began my lifelong pursuit of knowledge.
